The School of Hope, Managua, Nicaragua

Lacrosse the Nations pilot program is in partnership with the Colegio Cristiano La Esperanza (School of Hope) located inside La Chureca, the city trash dump on the outskirts of Managua, Nicaragua. The lacrosse program consists of a PE and after-school lacrosse program, a Life Skills curriculum that uses the sport to teach good health and critical life skills, and a Breakfast Nutrition Program.

Lacrosse PE Program

The lacrosse program is our conduit for change.  This program creates a space for kids to be kids, one of the only places where they can have fun, be safe, and play together productively.   It also provides incentive to increase school enrollment, improve attendance and graduation rates, and foster health and the development of critical life skills through our Curriculum.

Coaches

We have hired and trained two Nicaraguan lacrosse coaches to run the lacrosse program and be respected role models and mentors for the players.  Beginning in 2011 we implemented a Coaches Scholarship Program to provide for their continuing education.  We also have a Lacrosse Program Director who oversees the program and facilitates the best possible communication and accountability between the organization stateside and our coaches.

Nutrition Program

Lacrosse the Nations provides a breakfast nutrition program for all of the students who attend the School.  This breakfast program bolsters the students overall nutrient and caloric intake significantly and enhances each student’s cognitive learning ability.  It also acts as an incentive for parents to send their children to school to receive a well-balanced meal.

Beginning in 2011, we added a sports nutritional component.  This includes food and drink for each student after their lacrosse PE class.

Future Growth and Development

Internationally, LtN intends to grow our program at the SoH in Nicaragua through various initiatives developed to increase attendance and graduation rates. We will also further develop our Life Skills Curriculum and nutrition programs. We also intend to replicate this program model in more locations both internationally and domestically.
